How To Host a Fabulous, Stress-Free Brunch!

I’m not sure what the weather is like where you are, but here in East Texas spring has sprung! Now is the time for big hats, iced tea, and the ever popular brunch. Many people think that brunches have to be elaborate gatherings and they get flummoxed at the idea of hosting this type of event. If you find yourself in that category, then today is your lucky day: I have a simple solution. This year, skip the elaborate menu and have a hors d’oeouvres only party.  Now, some of you may feel a sense of panic when it comes to figuring out how many hors d’ oeuvres to prepare, but just follow the tips below, and you’ll be able to enjoy your party and your guests without spending all day in the kitchen.

  • A hors d’oeuvres should be a food item that can be consumed in 1 or 2 bites.
  • For a 2 hour party prepare 20 bites of food per person.
  • If you are having a crowd of 35 or less, plan on serving 4-5 different kinds of hors d’oeuvres.
  • For 35-60 guests, plan for 7-9 different kinds of hors d’oeuvres.
  • For 60 or more guests, you should have 9 or more different types of hors d’oeuvres.

  • Kick up the flavor: this will make people feel more satisfied.
  • Since the hors d’oeuvres will be replacing a full meal, remember to include a few sweet options. (Warning: mini cupcakes can be a budget buster since most people tend to eat at least 3 of them.)
  • Young people tend to eat more than an older crowd so take the age of your guests into consideration when planning your menu.
  • It’s also good to know that people tend to eat more during the first 90 minutes of an event, but after two hours consumption tends to pick up; especially if your event is being held around dinner time.

Remember to provide a variety of foods to please everyone. That means something for the vegetarian as well as the meat eater. Having both hot and cold foods will also keep everyone nibbling happily. Are you planning to host a brunch this year? What about a cocktail party? Comment below and let me know what’s on the menu!

  1. I like the tip about hors d’oeuvres being 1 to 2 bites. I never thought of hors d’oeuvres in terms of “bites”. Great tip!
