In my line of work, I get to be hands on with all sorts of events. Secretly, weddings are my favorite. OK, it’s not a secret anymore. However, in the days of Pinterest, weddings were starting to look very cookie-cutter. That’s why I’m so glad that the trends of the year are breathing new life into the wedding world. Read below to find out my favorite wedding trends of 2016.
- Freshly Picked Flowers
This may seem like a throw-back, and that’s because it is. During the upswing of the D-I-Y movement, brides were opting for silk or paper flowers. Some brides were even cutting out flowers all together in an effort to save money. Now couples are opting for local, fresh-picked flowers to adorn their venues.
- Banquet Style Seating
For a long time the only option for brides were round tables, which are not that easy to use in unique shaped venues, and really don’t offer many seating options. With banquet, or rectangular, style-tables, you can maximize your space, create unique table patterns, and make use of another trend: family style receptions!
- Shimmer and Shine
One sure fire way to glam up your wedding, or any event, is to add some sparkle. Sequins, glitter, and metallic materials are making a huge comeback in 2016, and I am beyond excited. Brides are adding the shine to everything from linens, invitations, and even bridesmaid dresses! Note: while I’m all for this trend, everything that glitters is NOT gold. This trend is best suited for evening weddings.
- Scrumptious Wedding Favors
Jordan Almonds were the go-to wedding favor for many years. They were cute, cheap, and easy to use, but they are also disgusting. I’m sorry (not really) if you are a fan of the things. The topic of what kind of favor to give always comes up in my bridal consultation, and I’m glad to see that many brides are embracing the idea of homemade treats. Not only are they delicious, but once your meal has been served guests can tear into their favor for an after-party snack or to get a burst of energy for a final round or dancing.

I get it, planning a wedding is hard. From the moment you slip that ring on, it’s almost like you fall into an alternate universe. You are living your normal life and at the same time making dozens of decions that will affect your big day. Lovelies, I need you to hear me: it is your day, and these decisions are yours (and maybe your fiancés) to make.
Social media is a great place to get inspiration, find vendors, and even good deals for your wedding. It may not be the best place to ask for advice. Every day I see brides posting things like “do you think I should…”, “is it OK to…”, or “I wish I could…”. I’m sure the commentors all mean well, but most of them don’t know you and the advice they throw out will have no bearing on their lives.
Brides, my sincerest wish for you is that you will have the wedding your heart desires with NO REGRETS. If you love burlap and lace: use it! Do you have an adorable pooch you want to include? By all means, do so. I’ve been married for almost 11 years, and I still carry a laundry list of things I wish I would have done differently. I don’t want that for you.
So, make your lists and pin your photos, but don’t retreat. Boldly make your decisions and you will leave your wedding with no regrets.
Here lately I have had quite a few brides who want to know how much money they will save if they opt not to have a rehearsal for their wedding. My answer is none. Why? My brides don’t have the option of not having a rehearsal. There are several reasons why I think most (there are some exceptions) brides need to have some type of wedding rehearsal, and here are just a few.
♡ You have a large wedding party. If you have more than 6 people in your wedding party, not having a rehearsal can spell disaster. Trying to get a large number of people to do something in an orderly and timely fashion without any preparation usually adds stress that could have been avoided.
♡ Your venue has stairs or a complicated layout. If anyone in your processional has to walk up or down a set of stairs having a wedding rehearsal is a good way to ensure their safety. The layout of your venue may require your wedding party to venture to unusual places like the kitchen. Holding a rehearsal will help familiarize everyone with the floor plan.
♡ The father of the bride is a little nervous. In my experience, the bride’s father usually has no idea what to do once he gets to the end of the aisle. The rehearsal can not only give him direction, but also bolster his confidence.
Rehearsals are all about logistics. It’s “you stand here”, “put your hands here”, “walk a little slower”, etc. While I’m a strong advocate for wedding rehearsals, I know that they won’t stop something random from happening on your big day. However, if you practice the basics it makes it a lot easier to handle the randomness of weddings.

Event planning terminology can be very confusing. One term that is very misleading is day-of coordination. In this day of Pinterest and D-I-Y projects, a lot of brides are opting to do the bulk of the wedding planning for themselves and to hire a day-of coordinator to ensure that all goes well on their wedding day. While I agree with their line of thinking, I disagree with those who believe their coordinator will simply show up on the morning of their wedding and be able to pull off a fabulous event. This belief is what makes the Visions by Vaughn day-of coordination service stand out from the rest. Read on to find out how we do it.
- We Don’t do “day-of”
Our services start long before the day of your wedding. Most of my day-of clients sign their contract 6-9 months before their wedding day, and I will begin working two months before the nuptials. Please hear me: I don’t know any professional wedding planners who do literal “day-of” services. Planning a wedding is a huge undertaking, and requires lots of small details that when added up make a big difference. If you are working with a planner who is not familiar with your details, this could spell disaster.
- We will wrangle your vendors
I have heard horror stories from brides about hair-dressers showing up late, bakers getting the cake wrong, or the DJ not playing the correct first dance song. Now, no wedding is perfect, but a lot of mishaps can be avoided with some well-timed phone calls and emails. We will contact all of your vendors 2 months, 2 weeks, and 2 days before your wedding.
- We’ll practice with you
I am always amazed by the number of couples who think that they do not need a wedding rehearsal. Yes, it may seem easy enough, but until you have a wedding rehearsal you don’t know how many options there are when it comes to the professional, and you won’t know if what do you have imagined will actually work with your venue. When you hire Visions by Vaughn LLC for day-of coordination packages, we will coordinate your wedding rehearsal which usually takes place some time during the week of the wedding.
- We will keep you on schedule
One of the greatest benefits of being my client is that you will receive a customized timeline. This timeline will include a breakdown of everything that is supposed to happen on your wedding day. This is invaluable! Everyone who has a part in your wedding (DJ, photographer, venue manager, parents of the flower girl, bridesmaids, etc.) will receive a copy of the timeline so that they know what is going on at all times, and when they are expected to do what. This will also help us keep to any deadlines set forth by your vendors.
Yes, you can plan your own wedding, but you shouldn’t have to take on all of the stress yourself. Hiring a professional planner for Day-of Coordination can make a huge difference in the overall flow on your special day.
